Hard working starship crews and bizarre aliens need recreation between space battles or discovering new life forms and new civilizations. During their leisure time, the inhabitants of the Star Trek universe engage in pretty nifty athletic hobbies. From Earth's pastime of baseball to the futuristic martial arts of Anbo Jitsu, Captain Sisko, Mr. Spock, Captain Picard and Worf love to work out, play hard or just plain work up a star soaked sweat. Here are sports you'll recognize, but also ones that will thrill with an alien angle. Baseball Earth's sport is alive and well in the future. In Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Captain Sisko and his crew love talking baseball when not playing the game in the holographic play rooms called holosuites. In these rooms, not only can any baseball field imaginable be recreated, but also players from the past like Babe Ruth or Hank Aaron can be called up as teammate or opponent. Buck Bokai was a fictional baseball player in DS9. Influenced by a real life lover of baseball, co-creator of Deep Space Nine, producer Michael Piller, Star Trek's darkly imagined spin-off had many episodes where baseball was featured. Captain Sisko (Avery Brooks) loved the game so much, he had an antique baseball on his desk throughout the run of the series. Anbo Jitsu Fans of this rough and tumble futuristic fighting style, dress in thick padding to avoid serious injury. It's called "the ultimate evolution of the martial arts." Introduced in Star Trek: The Next Generation episode, "The Icarus Factor", the combatants in this fast paced sport are Commander Riker and his father Kyle Riker. These two have serious family issues between them, so when they take up the electronic battle sticks to face one another, it's a real fight to the finish - or at least for the one who knows the sneakiest tactics to win. Despite dated American Gladiator style gear from the 1980's, the smooth fight choreography is not only fun to watch, but manages to integrate plot and conflict into the match exceedingly well. Dom-jot Rack 'em up! Dom-jot is best described as a cross between pool and pinball. It's played with a ball and cue stick on an oddly shaped table. Fans of it say it takes much time to master. In the Star Trek: Next Generation episode "Tapestry", Jean-Luc Picard fights a group of nasty aliens called Nausicans over a game of dom-jot. Jake Sisko, Captain Sisko's son of Deep Space Nine also enjoyed the game and was quite skilled at playing it. Parises Square This sci-fi game is still mysterious in form and function. Though never actually seen in any episode of Star Trek, one thing seems clear, it's pretty rough. In the Star Trek: Next Generation episode Future Imperfect, Riker is held captive in a holographic fantasy by a young alien. He's now Captain Riker commanding a future version of the Enterprise. When his fantasy son is injured off screen playing parises square, he tells Dr. Crusher that he was 14 when he started playing the game. Another time Wesley Crusher is upset that someone beat him at parises square. If the game is ever revealed in future Star Trek adventures, it's certain to be interesting. Klingon Bat'leth Fighting Klingons are a loud mouthed, brash alien race who prize honor and combat. They're a cross between the samurai of Japan and Native Americans. War mongering Klingons love to fight and use edged weapons like knives, swords or Bat'leths. It's their favorite way to battle in close quarters. Dan Curry, visual effects supervisor on Star Trek: The Next Generation designed the Bat'leth. Curry is a real life martial artist himself and not only crafted the weapon from scratch, but invented moves or katas associated with the weapon. It became so popular in the real world that it was used in a few Korean martial arts contests and some government agencies contacted Curry to possibly use the design in real life. Fans have even used the weapon for a good cause. Here's a link to a tournament for charity. Vulcan Martial Arts Loyal fans know Vulcans uses logic to govern their lives. However, when it comes to personal combat, they can be just as savagely brutal as Klingons. In the original series episode Amok Time, Spock travels to Vulcan to mate with an arranged partner - the beautifully deceptive T'Pring. As his pon farr or blood fever increases and he becomes more detached from logic, he must face his own comrade Captain Kirk in a fight to the death with Vulcan martial arts weapons. The fight starts off with the Lirpa - a thick staff - on one end is a wickedly sharp ax like blade, the other end is a rounded tip perfect for bashing an opponent's head into pulp. After the thoroughly winded Kirk manages to stay alive against Spock wielding the Lirpa, they use the Ahn-woon - a bola like cloth weapon good for binding, tripping or choking a person. The meaning behind the contest, the weapons employed and the skilled ways in which they're used make it one of the most memorable fights in all of Star Trek history. Honorable Mentions Fencing A favorite of Captain Picard on Star Trek: The Next Generation, this Earth competitive sport played in key scenes in various episodes including I, Borg. Not much changed in this futuristic version of sport fighting with swords, except for the computer calling the game play verbally. Kadis-kot This is a board game played with at least two players. It consisted of three sets of colored pieces, red, green and orange, played on a hexagonal board. It was Seven Of Nine's favorite game and figured in several Star Trek: Voyager episodes including the series finale, Endgame, where Neelix and Seven played the game over subspace communication. Three-Dimensional Chess This Star Trek signature game was first seen in the 2nd pilot of the original series - Where No Man Has Gone Before. Captain Kirk and Spock are playing it when news of the discovery of an old earth probe is announced on the ship's intercom. It was so popular the Franklin Mint released various collectible games based around the design. |
