Got the rainy day blues? Here are some great ideas for keeping kids happy and busy when they are stuck inside due to bad weather. 1. Board games. These can be fun for the whole family and will certainly keep the kids occupied for hours at a time. Pick a game that is easy for your child to play at his educational level. Good games for younger kids include sorry, shoots and ladders or candy-land. Older kids and even adults will enjoy classics like monopoly, life or trivial pursuit. Hold tournaments for several children with board games like checkers or chess, invite the neighbors over and enjoy some adult company while their children join in the tournament. Prizes can include anything from a day excused from chores to special treats and the extra incentive will keep them interested in the games. Don't have any board games? No problem. There are literally hundreds of online kid's activity sites where you can find and print your own board games, just cut out and color the pieces for hours of fun. 2. Cards. Many varieties of card games can be found on the local dime store shelf. If the kids aren't old enough to play with a regular deck of cards there are group games like uno, go fish, old maid and even memory match cards. 3. Puzzles and coloring pages. A great way to keep solitary children occupied is to present them with a great new puzzle or coloring book and crayons. Have them put the puzzles together and then glue them to cardboard so they can display their puzzle in their room as a poster. Coloring books can be just as fun, after they finish the pages, rip them out and hang them in the hallway to create a gallery of their work. Great coloring page printouts can be found on numerous sites on the internet as well. They can even choose themes that relate to schoolwork they are doing at the time. 4. Puppet shows. Who doesn't love a good puppet show? Give them some old socks, some markers or stickers and let them create their own puppets. Kids will really show off their imaginations with this one, and keep each other amused for hours creating their own fictional characters and story lines. 5. Interactive DVD's or computer games. Great for the solitary child or groups of children to keep them entertained. Choose a dvd or game based on the child's age level. Let the kids take turns being in charge of the dvd remote or take turns on the computer playing a game. Older kids can help the younger ones and caregivers can relax while the kids amuse themselves. If you don't own any kids games or dvd's, check out your local library for great free check outs. 6. Exercise class? That's right, physical education is a great way to spend the time and wear off all that extra energy that's buzzing around the house when kids can't get outside to run it off. Put on a music CD or DVD and just let the kids go crazy, dancing, turning, simple exercises. This not only will keep them entertained, but may just wind them down for a chance of a nap and quiet time for an adult to get other things done. 7. Play dress-up. Give them some old clothes, shoes or purses and let them play dress-up. Got any old Halloween costumes? Throw them into the mix. What's the use of saving an outfit they can only wear once? Let them have fun dressing up and acting out characters. Kid's will use their imagination to create any number of characters and act out some interesting stories if they are allowed to let their imagination run wild. Groups of children may enjoy creating a play with their new characters, acting out a scene from a movie or cartoon or even making up their own. Give them a few over sized jackets and some costume jewelry and watch your house turn into center stage. 8. Line games. Remember those old classics like Simon says, Red rover and London bridge? Games like these can be played inside just as easily as outside. Let the kids take turns on choosing a game and make sure they have an open area to play in. 9. Explorers! Yes the kids will become their own brand of Columbus or Marco Polo with this fun and educational project. Give them a map and let them discover a new country or "buried treasure". Older kids may enjoy looking up some place they may want to go in an encyclopedia or online. Have them write about what they will see and do there. Younger kids will enjoy drawing pictures of their new country make believe or real, and other ideas can be incorporated into this one like dressing up in the countries style, planning a vacation there, or writing a story about it. This project is limitless as to how far the kids can take it. 10. Treasure hunts. Have the kids stay in one room while an adult goes through the house and hides ordinary household objects. Then give them a list and let them spend the hours trying to find all of the treasures. Make prize bags with little treats for the ones who find the most, team up larger groups of children. 11. Home made craft projects. Turn trash into treasures with a little glitter, glue and construction paper. Old oat meal boxes, cereal boxes or other objects can be turned into fascinating works of art with just a little glue and colored paper. Let the kids choose what to make. Holiday ornaments, hand puppets, pencil holders are just a few ideas. There are a million internet sites from which to glean information on these projects and it will keep the kids busy for hours. 12. Hobbies. Introduce the kids to a new hobby or let them work on one they already have. Scrap-booking, sewing, and collecting are all great hobbies for kids and will give them something that is personally interesting for them to entertain themselves with on rainy days. These are just a few ideas to keep kids entertained on a rainy day. Kid's don't have to have the latest technological gadgets to have fun. Try one of these ideas or a combination of them and see how the hours seem to fly by. Not only will the kids have fun, but they will have memories that will last a lifetime. |
